Frequently Asked Questions
Things we get asked a lot
To make an appointment please call 0435 173 296 or email info@mmcp.com.au or submit an enquiry via the online form here. Mighty Minds Child Psychology will then be in contact with you to discuss your needs and book an appointment.
The first session is a parent-only session, unless otherwise discussed. This allows for a thorough child and family history to be taken and to enable an open discussion about your concerns and goals. You will have an opportunity to talk about what has led you to seek psychological services for your child, how you are hoping we can help and develop a plan and treatment goals for your child.
Initial sessions with your child will focus on gaining a shared understanding of their presenting concerns, establishing rapport and developing a treatment plan. Treatment with children usually involves their parents. This may include attending sessions with your child, attending at the start and end of your child’s sessions to provide an update and debrief on your child’s sessions and attending parent-only sessions. This phase may also include observations of your child in their education or childcare setting and/or liaising with teachers and other relevant professionals.
The recommended length and frequency of sessions vary depending on the presenting concern and many other factors. We will consult openly with you during the initial session and regularly throughout treatment to establish and review your child’s schedule of appointments and progress.
Prior to the first session, an email will be sent to you with a link to complete an intake and consent form. This will need to be completed before the session. If you have a referral from a GP, Paediatrician, or Psychiatrist, please ensure you have provided a copy of this before the session. Please also provide a copy of any prior assessment, reports, letters, and/or documents that may be relevant to providing an understanding of your child and their needs.
This will vary considerably depending on the age of your child, the presenting concerns and the treatment goals. In most cases, your child will attend sessions on their own and feedback will be provided to parents at the end of the session, however, this is very individual for each child and their situation. Your psychologist will discuss the suitability of you being in the session with your child. Our aim is to have a collaborative approach and work together as a team.
Learning assessments are important as students may be eligible for reasonable adjustments and special provisions during classroom learning and exams if they are adversely affected in a significant way by an impairment or disability, including learning disorders. This is available to individual students who may need special provisions in their learning program to achieve the learning outcomes and in assessment to demonstrate their learning and achievement. It includes special provisions such as use of assistive technology, access to rest breaks, and use of a separate room. The Cognitive and Learning assessments provided at Mighty Minds can be used to support applications for special provisions when appropriate.
Should you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment for any reason, a minimum of 24 hours notice is required to avoid a cancellation fee.

We understand that sometimes you may not know exactly what you need from a Psychology appointment, especially when a teacher or other Allied Health professional has recommended you engage with a Psychologist.
We can offer an initial general consultation for a single session to help determine what the next best steps might be for you. This could be helpful for you particularly if:
-
You were referred by a teacher/allied health professional that psychology engagement for your child may be helpful
-
Feel as though your child needs an assessment but unsure what this involves or if this is appropriate.
-
Your child has recently completed an assessment and you feel you need further discussion about the results or are unsure as to what the next steps are.
-
You feel like you need more support in advocating for your child at kindergarten or school.
